Trip Idea: Five Fabulous Beach Getaways

Beach at Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort

Beach at Caneel Bay, A Rosewood Resort

It’s still summer, but savvy travelers know that the best time to plan their winter getaway is before the weather turns cold. In fact, the best deals for tropical getaways are available for travel from mid-November through Christmas. Here are my picks (in no particular order) for amazing sun and sand vacations this winter.

1. Caneel Bay, St. John, USVI
This resort is Adirondack lodge meets Caribbean bliss. Rustic charm, but all of the luxury you would expect. Seven beaches situated on 170 acres. It’s like staying on your own private island.

2. Four Seasons Nevis
The friendliness of a small town in one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean, plus Four Seasons exclusivity, luxury and unparalleled service. All of this for room rates that will surprise you.

3. Rosewood Mayakoba
Situated along a mile-long arc of white Caribbean sand, Rosewood Mayakoba is the heart of a 1,600-acre luxury resort enclave located south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen. Gorgeous Spanish designed architecture, delicious food, and out of this world service.

4. Viceroy Anguilla
166 rooms situated on 35 lush acres, with more than 3,200 feet of beach frontage along both Barnes and Meads Bays, Viceroy Anguilla evokes a relaxed yet polished Caribbean sensibility. Activities for families, multiple dining options, and quiet spaces for couples. Plus, an amazing rock climbing wall.

5. Cayo Espanto, Belize
A luxury private island beach resort off the coast of Belize. Four acres with only seven villas. An all inclusive destination with world-class snorkeling and diving.

I have access to rates and packages that you can’t find anywhere else. Plus, when you stay at a Virtuoso hotel you typically receive the following complimentary amenities:

  • breakfast for two
  • an upgrade (if available)

Trip Report: Rosewood Mayakoba – July 2010

This was our second visit and it was every bit as good as the first.

Rooms:

Oceanview Suite

This suite is one of two suite types at the Rosewood Mayakoba that offer ocean views. The other is the Deluxe Oceanview Beach Suite which is larger and closer to the beachfront pool and restaurant area. There are also two suite types that are ocean front. These include the Beachfront Suites and the Two-Bedroom Presidential Oceanfront Suite. The remaining suites offer lagoon views.

Location:

The Rosewood Mayakoba is located approximately thirty five miles south of the Cancun airport and four miles north of the city of Playa del Carmen. It is part of the Mayakoba planned development of resorts that includes the Banyan Tree Mayakoba and Fairmont Mayakoba. The Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya is also nearby.

Pros: Easy to get to with direct flights from many airports in the United States. The drive to the resort is on a well maintained highway.

Cons: Can’t think of any…

Restaurant/Lobby:

There are three restaurants on site: Casa del Lago, Punta Bonita, and Agave Azul. The food at all of the restaurants is wonderful. There were plenty of vegetarian options and the servers were happy to accommodate special requests.

Gym/Spa:

I had a wonderful Swedish massage.

Check In/Out:

Since we were repeat guests they asked us upon arrival if we would like to take the boat or a golf cart to our suite. Of course,  I requested the boat. How many times in life do you get to arrive at your suite via a lovely boat ride? Sign me up!

Overall:

This resort is practically perfect for a relaxing getaway. Love the service, the food, the architecture – it’s all fabulous! Be sure to read my other review from our first trip in 2009.

Trip Report: Rosewood Mayakoba – June 2009

This was a great vacation! Loved it. In fact, we went back in July 2010.

Rooms:

Beachfront Suite

If you are a beach person and if you love privacy, then there is no better room than the Beachfront Suite. Every morning our butler would set up our chairs on our private deck for us, and we had an uninterrupted view of the beach. We didn’t have to lug around a big beach bag, we could walk a few steps into our suite to cool off in the air conditioning, check to see if we were getting sunburned, or grab something new to read. We chose this vacation to “get away”, and we truly felt that we had plenty of breathing room.

Restaurant/Lobby:

We had breakfast at Casa Del Lago every morning. The food was always delicious and fresh, but it wasn’t quite as good as the breakfast buffet at the Ritz in Cancun, which is our absolute favorite, and is completely over the top in terms of variety.

All of our other meals at the hotel were eaten in our room or at Punta Bonita. We chose Mexican dishes at all but one meal, and everything we ordered was great. We thought that the meal portions were the perfect size and the food prices were reasonable for what one would expect at a luxury resort. However, the $14 margaritas did tend to add up!

We ventured to the Banyan Tree to eat at Saffron one night for dinner and it was an amazing experience. The Rosewood concierge had let them know that I am a vegetarian, and the chef came out to discuss his thoughts on the menu that he would cook for me, and asked for my input! When traveling, I’m used to ordering regular menu items without meat, eating things that I don’t particularly care for, or ignoring the fact that items may be cooked with chicken stock or lard. It was such a treat to have my own special menu, created on the fly by the chef. Not only that, but the food was heavenly! After dinner we went to have drink in the lobby bar. They had a large selection of fun and unique cocktails and we lingered for a while listening to the musicians who were playing in the courtyard.

Gym/Spa:

We did not go to either the gym or the spa.

Check In/Out:

Easy process. Forgot to put my camera in purse so I was unable to take pictures on the boat ride to our suite.

Overall:

This hotel hits every mark. We love the architecture, the service is outstanding, the food is a perfect match for our tastes.
