Trip Report: Banyan Tree Mayakoba – March 2010

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

In need of a getaway we decided to stay at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, based on fabulous reviews.

Rooms:

Courtyard Pool Villa

We originally booked a Garden Pool Villa, but due to the cold temperatures in Mexico we decided upon arrival to upgrade to a Courtyard Pool Villa. The main reason for this was that the Courtyard Pool Villa has a hot tub and the Garden Pool Villa does not. I would recommend this as the minimum room category for anyone staying at here during the colder winter months.

The other way this room differs from the Garden Pool Villa is the addition of the pavilion. We enjoyed having this space for being able to quietly make coffee in the morning when the other person was sleeping. It was also useful for in-villa dining, because the messy dishes were not left in your bedroom area.

Location:

The Banyan Tree Mayakoba is located approximately thirty five miles south of the Cancun airport and four miles north of the city of Playa del Carmen. It is part of the Mayakoba planned development of resorts that includes the Rosewood Mayakoba and Fairmont Mayakoba. The Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya is also nearby.

Restaurant/Lobby:

The breakfast buffet is amazing, and definitely on par with the one at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancun. It’s much larger than the buffet at the Rosewood Mayakoba, in terms of sheer quantity of selection. Other than breakfast at Oriente, we only ate at lunch and dinner at Sands, Saffron, or via in-villa dining. All of those places have plenty of vegetarian options, and I never got bored with the food even though we stayed for eight days.

Gym/Spa:

Despite having a spa credit, we did not use the spa or the gym facilities.

Check In/Out:

Easy and comfortable process. They quickly assisted us in our desire to upgrade our room.

Details: Trip Length: Seven nights Room Type: Courtyard Pool Villa
